In ancient Hawaiʻi, men and women ate their meals separately; also women and the rest of society were not allowed to eat foods that were not common or foods that were only served during special occasions. However, in 1819, King Kamehameha II removed all the religious laws that were practiced. King Kamehameha II performed a symbolic act by eating with the women, thus ending the Hawaiian religious taboos. This is when the lūʻau parties were first created.

Taro is one of the historic staple foods of Hawaii, most notably as the base ingredient in poi.  While poi be an acquired taste for some visitors, we do recommend that you try this important part of Hawaiian culture and cuisine.  Because taro is similar in texture and taste to potato, it can also be found as chips, fries, pancakes, and in some desserts.

The plant itself is grown only in limited regions of the islands now, including the beautiful Hanalei valley.  To learn more about the history of taro on the islands, and the current and historical farming methods, tours of a 6-generation family farm are available at the Ho`opulapula Haraguchi Rice Mill.  Samples of poi are included on the tour!
