Tubing

For a relaxing morning or afternoon, tubing on Kaua’i is a unique, must-include activity. In the late 1800s, sugar cane fields and plantations were flourishing near Lihue, but more water was needed to sustain the industry. To answer this need, in the 1870’s, engineers designed and Chinese laborers hand-dug an intricate system of ditches, tunnels and flumes to deliver water from the interior rain forest to the thirsty fields. With the closure of the Lihue sugar plantations in 2000, Kaua’i Backcountry Adventures was able to open a section of these waterways for exclusive tours. Starting with an 4WD journey to the interior of the island, you’ll gather your tubes and embark on a one of a kind, guided journey through open canals, flumes, and underground tunnels as you learn about the history of the island.

This is a very popular activity, so advance reservations are highly recommended. Tours are open to anyone 5 years and older. Bring your swimsuit or water clothing, closed toed shoes and sense of awe on this fascinating water tour. Headlamps and lunch are provided.
